How to Calculate GPA in Pakistan

Semester GPA, commonly called GPA or SGPA, represents your academic performance during a particular semester. Unlike a simple average, GPA is normally calculated by taking the credit hours of each course into account.

A course carrying more credit hours has a greater effect on the semester GPA than a course carrying fewer credit hours.

The GPA Formula

GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours

Quality points are calculated by multiplying the credit hours of a course by the grade points earned in that course.

Example:

Suppose you completed three courses:

Mathematics: 3 credit hours and 4.00 grade points.

Physics: 4 credit hours and 3.50 grade points.

English: 2 credit hours and 3.00 grade points.

Mathematics quality points = 3 x 4.00 = 12.00

Physics quality points = 4 x 3.50 = 14.00

What Is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your academic performance during one particular semester.

For example, a CGPA of 3.20 produces a mathematical 4.0-scale equivalent of 80%.

Consider two courses. If one course carries 4 credit hours and another carries 1 credit hour, the 4-credit course contributes four times as many quality points for the same grade-point value.
